Frequently Asked Questions
At Mainecoon Gods, we believe that transparency builds trust. Below are answers to some of the most common questions families ask before and during the adoption process. If you don’t see your question here, feel free to reach out directly.
Adoption Basics
-
Not at this time. All Maine Coon Gods cats and kittens are adopted as companions only. They will be spayed/neutered prior to adoption. We believe responsible breeding requires deep knowledge, health testing, and experience that comes from intense mentorship. Our focus at this time is the health and well-being of our own furries. (Simply said - We only have so many hours in the day…. we are not able to commit to mentorship at this time)
-
Begin by completing our pre-approval application found under “Adoption Process”. Once reviewed and any further questions discussed,, we will notify you of your application status and next steps. From there, keep an eye on our kittens through our social media and website. Being pre-approved gives you priority on “pick Day”!
-
We do not keep a waitlist. Rather, we pre-approve and give everyone equal opportunity to be the first to request adoption of their pick of the litter!
Don’t forget to sign up for email notification of upcoming and existing litters!
-
Adoption fees start at $4000 USD and vary depending on gender and characteristics such as shaded, Polydactyl, etc. Cost for each kitten will be available prior to Pick Day.
-
Our kittens are typically ready between 12-14 weeks of age. Once they are fully weaned, vaccinated, neutered/spayed, and have received their diploma from kitty college (aka mom), they will be ready to fill your home with love.

Great question!
Maine Coons are such a sought after breed that occasionally, very bad people try to scam and profit by creating fake accounts to advertise kittens for sale. They steal pictures from reputable breeders to seem legit. Whether you join our MCG family or choose to purchase from another cattery, — here are some tips. If it is a very low price- most likely a scam. It takes a lot of resources, medical care, testing, etc. for breeders to be able to offer the best of the breed. If it is a cheap price, they are either a scammer or unethical breeder. ALWAYS ask to see the kitten and breeder via FaceTime or zoom. If they will not, do not proceed. It is a big investment and transparency is a must. A reputable breeder will always be willing to do this.
-
Unfortunately no. the saying… It’s us, not you…
Unintentionally, things can be transmitted to the kittens that are harmful. For the protection of your new family member and our cattery, we do not allow Cattery visits. But don’t forget we can FaceTime and send pictures. There is nothing secretive, it is about the health of the cats and your future kitten.
Health and Care
-
Yes. Every breeding cat in our program is health screened and genetically tested before joining our cattery. Those tests will be provided to you by request prior to you committing to purchase a kitten.
-
Yes. They are spayed/neutered prior to leaving our cattery. All you have to worry about when they join you is loving on them and keeping them healthy!

We feed a high-quality, balanced diet chosen to support the Maine Coon’s size and nutritional needs. Adopting families receive a feeding guide in advance so they can be prepared. On Gotcha Day, you will receive a gift bag that includes food that they have been eating to allow continuity until you figure out your own preference. It is recommended to transition to a new diet (if you choose) gradually as to not disturb their gut health and cause issues.
Some breeders choose to feed raw, however I have found that the distributers of high quality raw food are hard to find. Unfortunately, you may not know there are any issues with the raw food until there are issues…. For this reason, I chose to feed high quality dry and wet food. With that said, I have researched the benefits of raw diets and there are many. You just have to choose what is right for you.

Polydactyl refers to extra toes on the paws, giving them large, mitten like paws. Sometimes referenced to the Earnest Hemingway Cats.
6/6/6/6 means six toes on each paw
6/6/5/5 means six toes on the front paws and five on the back paws
6/6/7/7 means six toes on the front paws and seven on the back paws
Polydactyly is a dominant gene. So if one parent has the gene, 50% of the offspring will have the trait. They are, in my opinion, remarkable and highly sought after to those that are admirers.
We currently have two that are polydactyl! Our Sire, Poseidon and Queen, Alcyone. Both are 6/6/6/6. We are excited to have polydactyl kittens to offer!

At MCG, our focus goes beyond health and beauty — safety is just as important.
Before adoption day, your kitten will be microchipped. If they ever decide to wander a little farther than intended, a microchip significantly increases the chances of being reunited with them. It also provides a reliable way to confirm ownership if someone finds your beloved companion.
Your kitten’s microchip will be registered in a national database with you listed as the primary contact and MCG as the secondary contact. If you cannot be reached, the registry can contact us, and we will help facilitate reconnecting you with your kitten.
Logistics
-
If local to Charlotte, NC, or surrounding area, we will happily meet you for pick up.
If further away, we offer a transportation option. It entails the cost of the airline ticket or reasonable gas charge to drive further, with a fee to the human companion for their time to transport. We do not transport our babies in cargo on a plane. They are always with a human escort that is focused on them and making sure their needs are met and along side them the whole way, offering love and support.
We will work with you to customize transportation to your needs and have the least amount of stress on your new kitty.
-
Yes, we do!
If a flight is needed, whether domestic or international, safe, hand-delivered travel can be arranged for an additional fee.
Our cats are never shipped by cargo. Instead, they fly in-cabin with a trusted companion and are personally handed to their new family just outside of customs (if international) or at the arrival gates at the destination airport. -
No. Travel and delivery costs are not included in the adoption fee. Transportation fees are quoted individually based on location and method of delivery. We’re happy to provide an estimate during the approval process once travel plans are discussed.
There is no mark-up. The flights cost what they cost and the fee for the travel companions’ time is communicated up front and goes directly to them, not MCG.
We offer this as a convenience to make it seamless, not an opportunity to make money. We will figure it out together so it is the best experience!
-
The comfort and safety of our cats always come first. Every delivery is arranged so that your cat or kitten is never unattended or stressed during travel. They are accompanied by a trusted companion at all times, ensuring a smooth and calm journey to their new home. They travel in luxury, in an airport approved carrier with a fold out option for the times in the airport, so they can have more room to move around. We also provide a travel cat box offered to them frequently, along with food, water and treats. (Image all this logistically! That is why the travel companion earns every bit of the transport fee! They are great!)
-
Yes, international adoptions are possible, but only through hand delivery. We work closely with our travel partners to coordinate all logistics and documentation and the deliverer personally meets the family at the destination airport.

Gotcha Day - The special day you officially adopt!
We will communicate frequently leading up to the big day, answering all your questions and ensuring you are confidently prepared.
Your fluff nugget will arrive freshly bathed and ready for the many photos that will ensue! You will receive all immunization records, a few of their favorite toys, a small blanket from their birth mom for comfort (scent recognition), a package of their current food and other fun goodies to make the transition seamless.
There will be a lot of communication leading up to Gotcha day so that there is nothing left to chance and no questions unanswered.
Post-Adoption
-
Absolutely! We like to consider this an open adoption!!
With your permission, we will stay in touch to offer help any way we can. We would be overjoyed to hear from you with updates and lots of pictures!!
If you prefer to ride off into the sunset, we honor that as well!

Please contact MCG first!!!
We know that life circumstances can change. This is a zero judgement zone!
We go to great lengths to ensure the kittens are matched with the perfect family for them and likewise. Your adoption and kitten are specific to you.
If your circumstances change, we ask to be the first call so we can help with next steps. Don’t ever feel like you are stuck. We will help!
The agreement we both enter into outlines that the cat/kitten will be returned to us if you are unable to care for them and cannot be re-homed without our written approval. That is the legal jargen our attorney says needs to be in there. Please do not be intimidated by that. The entire goal is to make sure the kitty is safe, loved and living their best life! We will work with you to make sure that happens!
